Growing Up

As I picked up Meg from school yesterday, she walked out with her bag of goodies. She and Steve had participated in the American Heart Association Jumprope thing at her school. She raise money and jumped rope for it. She received gifts for raising money. I thought she looked so cute with her big bag of stuff. She looked so proud and excited. When we got to the car, she pulled up her shirt a little and clipped to her belt loop was a radio that had earphones.

At the time, I did not think much about the radio. We got home, and she crawled out of the back. She had the earphones in, and I realized that I had no idea what she was listening too. It scared me. I told her that her dad probably needed to approve what she listens to. She told me that it's okay I don't listen to the words. Oh my! Can you believe it? I use to listen to teenagers say the same thing. I can't help worrying about the future.

The neat thing was that she was clicking through stations, and said I better turn the station because this is rap music. I think that it is bad. I did not even know that Meg knew what rap music was. I am consistently praying for my kids to make the right choices and lean on God for their direction. I know ultimately they have to be gently guided with a lot of prayer.-Seeing your kids grow up is hard.

I actually cringed when I read your post today.

"that it's ok I don't listen to the words" - That seems about 5 years (ast least) too early.

Keep giving her back to God Wendy. Thanks for the reminder.

Hey Wendy!
I have to say, I am so happy all of the radio stations here are arabic...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!! I love the fact that my kids are not being raised in "main stream America". It is always difficult when we come home for a spell because it's an overwhelming bombardment of American society, Clothes, music, food, t.v. etc. I tend to use psychology on our kids when it comes to things such as "unwholesome" music. I ususally talk about how wasteful and mindnumbing it is. Example: rap music is not at all "music" and the rappers are uneducated. Their lack of education is shown through their atrocious vocabulary, extremly poor lyrics and the way they dress is just absurd. How can you walk or even run when your pants are hanging to your knees? And the people who listen to it, show their ignorance in anything artistic or educational as well etc etc. For some reason, my kids always respond to this blut honesty really well. It's not just in things like music, but explanations for cultural controvercies here etc. I find when we come home, taking this approach really lessens the whining of wanting fast food all the time, sitting in front of the tv for hours on end, shopping, and just about anything else that America has to offer that we don't get overseas, hahaha. Hang in there, I'm sure Meg is a good girl and she has great parents who want the best for her.
